For a long time, we thought visibility was the answer.
Once we had basic tracking in place, we could at least see where trucks were. That helped. We could respond faster when something went wrong.
But what we learned quickly was that visibility mostly tells you what already happened.
A delay would show up on a screen — after it had already impacted a store. A missed appointment triggered emails and calls, but by then the damage was done. Stores were short on inventory, staffing plans were off, and customers felt it downstream.
We weren’t managing delivery. We were chasing it.
The biggest issue wasn’t lack of information — it was lack of foresight. We couldn’t see problems early enough to prevent them. Everything was reactive.
That’s when our internal conversations changed. Instead of asking “How do we track better?” we started asking, “How do we stop this before it happens?”
That shift in thinking set the stage for everything that followed.
